C.S.S.A State Basketball Report

Two years of preparation saw Pacific Coast Christian School’s Open Boys Basketball team widen their winning trail at the recent C.S.S.A NSW State Basketball Championships which were held on September 2.

Eight champion schools representing the 8 Zones of NSW contested the event. The Pacific Coasts boys began the day by defeating Hunter CS 25-8 in their first game of the day. (20 minute games).

In their second game the Pacific Coast Boys lost to Inaburra 23-9 - quickly showing who the team to beat was.

Game 3 in our pool saw Pacific Coast defeat Nepean Zone 35-14!

Pacific Coast then met Pacific Hills in the major semi-final. Pacific Hills had recently defeated 2014/2015 State Champions “Oxford Falls” in their Zone finals prior to this tournament so were an in-form team. After trailing Pacific Hills for 18 minutes of the 20 minute semi-final, Elijah Holland shot 2 points to place Pacific Coast in the lead, only to have the lead taken away with 40 seconds to go.

The Pacific Coast boys remained cool under extreme pressure and School Captain, Eli Gordon was fouled with 3 seconds remaining (clock stopped). Under the ultimate pressure (Pacific Coast behind by 1 point with 3 seconds on the clock), Gordon shot 2 from 2 - giving Pacific Coast the win by 1 point and their place in the grand final!

In the Grand Final, the Pacific Coast team tackled Inaburra and were down 10-11 at half-time. After taking the lead at 2 stages in the final, the boys were eventually outplayed, losing to Inaburra 36-25.

Following the game the Pacific Coast Boys each received their runners-up trophies and the achievement of being the number 2 team in the C.S.S.A NSW state!

Next term the Pacific Coast Basketball Development Program will continue with a focus now on our girls teams and this year’s junior boys teams!
